Reader’s Life – Binge reading is fun

There is something fun about starting a brand-new series as it is published. Sure, some people do complain if the book(s) end(s) with a cliffhanger, something that doesn’t bother me, probably because I’ve seen it happening so much with TV shows and movies that it just makes me impatiently await the next one. Or await it more impatiently than if it didn’t end up with a cliffhanger.

Then again, there is also something fun about binge reading a series after it has been completed, either because I chose to wait or because I didn’t know about the series or the author prior to starting it.

For instance, a year ago, I gave a try to a series by an author I didn’t then know: Darynda Jones and her incredible Charley Davidson. And all this because I was telling my friend, again, about the Dr. Charlotte Stone series, which I had just finished rereading. “Give it a try”, she told me. “You’ll see, I think that it is really your kind of books.”

She was right. I read the whole 13 books in a month and a half, and the only reason it took so long is because I often had to wait for the library to get the books (plus a tennis coverage, which is a time when I have no time to read more than a few pages a day, on the transit to the tournament and before sleep). The good thing is that I was told about the books a mere few weeks after the last of the series came out. Cue binge reading.

In fact, I did the same with the Charlie Stone series, a few years ago.

Right now, I am also binge reading a series that has been completed. However, the difference, this time, is that I did it on purpose. Or partly on purpose, because when I read the first book for the first time, I wasn’t due. Not the book’s fault. But hindsight is always 20/20, because when I saw that the sixth book of K.F. Breene’s Demigods of San Francisco would be the last, I decided that I would give it another chance and binge read the whole.

That was a good decision.

I am currently in a better place to thoroughly enjoy the books, and I am making the best of it. A week after starting the series, I’m already a quarter through the third book, and the only reason I am not further advanced is because I read another short story in the middle of the first book.

And the only reason I won’t finish it over the weekend is because I have a book to read and review before the end of this weekend. A whole other genre (a biography), but no less interesting (about tennis).

How can someone know that I am binge reading? Because of the quantity of take-out I eat, the lack of sleep, the lack of house cleaning, the complete immersion in the book. Taking a day’s break (or two) will not do more than impede my binging speed a little. And, in a sense, it will only build my anticipation a little more for the other half of the series.

You can definitely expect a complete review of the whole series (spoiler free, of course) sometime next week.
